Ray of Hope

“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.”

Hebrews 6:19

I saw it breaking through. It was just a small flicker compared to the vast expanse all around. There it was isolated in the sky amongst the thick clouds, a faint shining ray of light. Small and unassuming, most passers by didn’t notice it was there. Some how this little shining ray off in the distance had pierced the sky and the little beam came cascading to the earth. On days like this, a little light is often received as something fairly insignificant. But, for me and the ground where it touched that glow was a captivating reminder of that most essential gift of God, hope.

Why hope matters? In the hustle and bustle of life we are driving to and from one task or another. Scurrying like ants at their toil we do not always think about these unseen necessities of life. Hours turn into days, days into years, and soon we have a life. It is only when life is interrupted that we begin to desperately grasp for these unseen essentials, hope being at the top. The small things we often take for granted become magnified. No wonder the Psalmist said, “Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path” (Psalm 119:105). The promises of God become paramount when we start to think about the paths we are on. Where are we going? How will we survive? Does anyone care? Hope in God gives us light to continue on the journey.

God is not the abandoning type. This is why hope in God is an anchor for the soul. His commitment and care give our lives a meaning and purpose. Jesus reveals that God is good and that he loves us still. Therefore we have hope in all circumstances of life. Christ is alive and he abides with us even through the thick darkness of life. Sometimes it may feel like nothing more than “this little light of mine,” but the truth is that we are the light of the world. People desperately need you to live the faith you have in Christ because it gives hope. Don’t ignore the good that God is seeking to shine through you this very day.
