Low Battery

“Seated in a window was a young man named Eutychus, who was sinking into a deep sleep as Paul talked on and on.”
Acts 20:9

The view from the preacher’s seat is an interesting one. When I first started preaching in Sweeny, one of my beloved members used to make goofy faces at me to try to get me to laugh. It’s not uncommon to find heavy eyed people in the pews. For many this cannot be helped (health and age are factors). Poor preaching also carries a share of the blame. I think what we are finding far to commonly amongst us is a running on empty way of living. We are all so busy at work and at play that there is little room left for rest. Seldom do we think of rest as a spiritual discipline, but it certainly becomes a factor when what we have left for God is fumes. I’m concerned for the way in which we leave little room for attention to God. Many of us are traveling through life with the “Low Battery” light flashing.
The need to be recharged spiritually is continual. When Jesus taught his disciples to pray he instructed them to ask of God for “daily” bread (Matt. 6:11, Luke 11:3). I think the petition to our Heavenly Father goes beyond daily nutritional needs. We need to be feeding on the goodness of the Holy Scriptures for the needs of the heart. We have daily needs of meditation and prayer. Too easily we race to the end of the day without renewing our minds in Christ. We become mentally, spiritually, and emotionally desolate. Like Eutychus, we will fall and crash if we are not refreshed. This young man reminds us that none of us know when we may die. The prevalent attitude of “when I am old and done living my life then I will become serious about my faith” is a terrible lie. Many are deceived by this way of thinking to the point of losing their soul. This week instead of seeing where you can find time for God in your busy schedule, start with God and see where you can find time for everything else. >

Thank you, Nathan. We all need to realize that when we are walking in the light, that means putting Christ first in our lives, not just when we have time. I pray everything is going well for you in your new home. I know the church is blessed by having you there.

Always very good thoughts, son. Your conclusion reminds me of a favorite scripture, “Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and these things shall be added unto you.” Matt 6:33
