WHEN HOLLYWOOD DOES HOLY

“Seek and read from the book of the LORD”
Isaiah 34:16

With Easter upcoming, there have been several religious based movies in the works. Earlier this month, Son of God was released in theaters. It was a big screen version of the History Channel’s acclaimed series The Bible telling the story of Christ. This weekend two more faith inspired films will be released in theaters. God’s Not Dead tells the story of a college philosophy student who must defend his belief in God. The movie deals with some of the tough questions many people have concerning the existence of God. Noah, is the biggest budgeted Bible inspired movie ever. None has been more star studded since Charlton Heston and Yul Brynner filled the roles of Moses and Pharaoh in The Ten Commandments. It is already receiving a lot of criticism for it’s artistic license in telling the story of Noah and the flood.
It is hard to tell sometimes what good there may be in a film. No movie is going to perfectly capture the story of Scripture. I am amazed to realize how few read the Bible. In our fast paced world there seems to be less and less time that people make to open the Good Book. Movies can be an effective way to tell a story. They can inspire others to think and consider their life. As with all things, it is imperative that we “examine the Scriptures daily” so we can see the truth from the twisted. Overall, I am encouraged that God is being discussed in places that he has long been shut out. That Jesus came, lived, died on the cross, was buried, and rose the third day is more powerful than any screenplay written. The Gospel has been received with mixed reviews for a long time. Dazzling visuals and special effects cannot replace what faith alone can bring. In the end, The Book is always better than the movie.
