For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight in love.
Ephesians 1:4
It’s 2016, and here in America each day draws us little bit closer to our presidential election. Each day brings new news about the latest campaign polls, sound bites, and surveys. This will only increase until the year draws to a close. For some it is a time of great excitement, for others it is a time of great fear. What will the future of America be? Will leadership lean more to the right or to the left? How will this affect us as Christians? I would like to encourage you to think about the election through another lens. Namely, consider the election that has already taken place.
God cast his vote. His gracious choice was revealed and put on display 2,000 years ago. Jesus is the revelation of God’s election. Think about these words:
You did not choose me, but I chose you – John 15:16
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. —Romans 5:8
For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight in love. —Ephesians 1:4
He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. –2 Timothy 1:9
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. —1Peter 2:9
Our holy and compassionate God made his decision to save us. He has claimed us as his own. He has made his choice. It is choice not bound or persuaded by political alliances or influence of power. It was God’s own desire for his glory born out of his love. The elect are those who have accepted God’s calling and seek to follow him through hearts of faith.
God is faithful. He does not make outrageous claims that he will not keep. He is not seeking to win you over in order to extend his campaign. His desire is to bring as many as possible to share in loving relationship with him. This is much bigger than politics. God has inaugurated his kingdom in his Son and it will stand forever.

Such wise and encouraging words are so needed as we approach this election.
