My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me.
Psalms 63:8
Recent weeks in the Waco community have brought to mind the many heroes among us who are serving and defending us each day. As Americans we often take for granted the many who are protecting and securing our great land. They are men and women who face danger and risk their lives in order that we may live in safety. Sunday, May 17th was a day of violence and shock for all of us. It is a reminder that evil is present in our world, but so is God. Although many died that afternoon there were many more that were spared and protected. Though unseen we know that God is constantly working in our world for good. His invisible presence lifts and sustains, revealing God as the true hero of all things.
All through out the history of the Bible we read of great men and women of faith who overcome the impossible. The writer of Hebrews reminds us of the many heroes who lived by “the conviction of things not seen” (Heb. 11:1). Yet, from Abel to Rahab they each point us to a common truth. God is the real hero. They are normal people who are being carried by the right hand of God. Faith becomes their defining quality because it is God who is good and great, and they put their trust in him. As Christians we join them in “fixing our eyes” on the greatness of God in Jesus Christ (Heb. 12:2).
