Someone to Lean On

But woe to the one who falls when there is not another to lift him up.

Ecclesiastes 4:10b

There are many reasons I’m thankful that we have been able to homeschool our boys.  It allows us special learning opportunities that cannot be experienced in a typical classroom setting.  We had one of those special learning moments this past week.  Heather, Micah, Caleb and myself enjoy participating in the Meals and Wheels program that our church is involved with here in Waco.  Once a month we help deliver these meals to folks who are facing different challenges everyday.  Many of them are elderly who live alone.  They are glad to be receiving the food, but they are even more delighted to see the people coming to visit them.  You should see their faces light up when they answer the door and see two handsome young men delivering those meals.  Not many 12 and 13 year old boys are able to go door to door delivering lunches to those in need.  They have learned a lot through this work.

This week, we were delivering to a home we had not been to before when it happened.  Caleb and Micah knocked on the door as usual, but when the woman was coming to the door she fell.  Thankfully, I was able to get inside and help her to her chair.  Once there she was able to recover from her faintness.  I later learned that it was uncommon for her to be there by herself.

We need some one to lean on.  God said it best a long time ago, “It is not good for man to be alone” (Gen. 2:18).  Moments like these remind us how much we depend on those that are around us.  God has given us all families, friends, neighbors, and community in order to give one another support and strength.  He created his church to be a spiritual community bound together by faith in Jesus Christ.  We look out for one another, care, forgive, and help one another through this journey.  Let us never forget that God has placed us here to lift each other up.
