HOLLOW BE YOUR NAME?

O my God, in you I trust; let me not be put to shame; let not my enemies exult over me.
Psalm 25:2

“OMG” has become a popular phrase in today’s text driven world. Language is fluid. Words carry different meaning dependent on both the voice of the speaker and hearer. “Oh my God, look at those shoes” rings hollow compared to David’s cry, “O my God, in you I trust.” I wonder how confused David would be if he were to live in today’s world that trivializes the holiness of God.
A few months ago, my family and I were outside our home doing yard work. The boys were stacking up limbs and branches that had fallen from the trees do to our dry summer. One tree had become so dry that my 12 year old son, Micah, was able to push it down to the ground. It was still a very large and heavy tree, but it had begun to rot and hollow out. At first glance, the tree did not look that much different from its peers, but inside it was already dead. It was only a matter of time and stress before it came crashing to the ground. The broken limbs and fallen branches were a sign of things to come.
Our spiritual health can have similar signs. Our words, behaviors, and attitudes are often the early warnings. Do our words come from a heart engaged in daily walking and trusting in Christ? Do our actions reflect a life that is led by God? Does your heart still soften at the knowledge of God’s mercy and grace to humanity? If the answer is no, then one must know that the fall is not far away. David’s prayer is a good model for us all. Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long. Psalm 25:4-5
