Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come and the years draw near of which you will say, “I have no pleasure in them”
Ecclesiastes 12:1
Do you remember what it was you dreamed of becoming when you were a child? I remember wanting to be an astronaut. I was captivated with the thought of space, the stars, the planets. Living near NASA helped to plant the seeds in my imagination of soaring to the moon. (Ironically, now that we live in Waco, I can feel the rockets blasting off at Spacex!) Something happens to us during those growing years and our dreams begin to change. We start to have more stars in our eyes towards the opposite sex and can no longer see the ones in the sky.
What about when you became a Christ follower? Do you remember the goals and plans you had in the beginning? I’m sure you imagined great things for your life as you began your walk of faith. However, much like those childhood dreams, our goals for our faith can become nothing more than a distant memory. Many stop going to church after awhile. I am saddened by the massive numbers of young people who no longer attend church after they graduate from High School. Others still continue to faithfully gather for worship, but are comfortable with giving God as little of themselves as possible. Spiritual apathy is rampant in America. We are comfortable with living the American dream at the expense of letting the mission of Christ fall by the wayside.
Then, there are those who inspire me the most. They have taken a different approach to life. They are continuing to grow up in Christ as the years advance. Men and women of faith who continue to challenge themselves to look for ways to serve God and do good to all. They have not forgotten that good confession of faith that they made in their youth. Theirs is a love that continues to grow and grow. Theirs is a light that burns brighter and brighter even though the body may be growing weaker. In them dwell the Spirit of the living God and they are not ashamed. They live to fulfill the greatest dream that anyone could ever have. When they grow up they want to be like Jesus.
