Gone Fishing

Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?”
John 21:15

It began simply enough. “Come follow me” he said and they did just that. They left their nets, fishing equipment, everything (Matthew 4:20, Luke 5:11). Becoming fishers of men would lead them on a journey unlike any they had ever known. They heard Jesus preach and teach. They watched him with people great and small. They saw him perform signs and wonders that could not be explained. For three and a half years they witnessed it all. Then, at the end they went back where they had started…fishing for fish.
When did you first discover that your life was never going to be the same again. For those who grew up in the arms of the church, you have lived in the shadow of God’s blessing your whole life. Perhaps the change for you to choose Christ did not come with a dramatic calling. In baptism, you made a commitment for your life, and that was no small thing. There was excitement as you began. You experienced the joy of knowing God by walking in his Spirit. But as so often happens, after the dust settles and time goes by we start to go back to life as we had known it before. We are creatures of habit and comfort. The mission of Christ is more marathon than sprint and many drop out of the race.
When the disciples went back to there fishing boats the resurrected Christ found them. They had gone fishing, but Jesus call is for them to go into all the world. Where he was sending them would demand their very lives. It could not be accomplished half heartedly. The question must be asked if they were all in. Jesus said it this way, “Do you love me more than these?”. Do we love Christ more than our old way of living and thinking? Do we love him enough to take the risk of leaving our comforts behind for his sake? If our response wavers we will not be up to the task. What will your answer be?
