Relentless Love

“but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 5:8

There are many things about God that amaze me. His nature is unlike anything we have ever known. One that continues to blow me away every time I meditate on it, is his loving pursuit of humanity. In many ways, the Bible could be summed up as the story of God’s relentless love for mankind. Adam and Eve hid from God. God found them. When the world was on the brink of destroying itself, God called Noah to build a life giving vessel to save it. He made a promise to Abraham that would bless all nations. He heard the cry’s of Abraham’s children as they were oppressed for 400 years in Egypt and he sent Moses to rescue them. In need of instruction and guidance he gave them his Law. A covenant making him their God and they his own people. Constantly, they would sin and wander away from God. He would call, seek, and search to bring them back. He gave them fathers, prophets, priests, judges, kings to lead the people to God. The cycle of calling, return, and falling away continued. Finally, he sent his one and only son.
It is this final act of reaching out to man that reveals the full extent of God’s love. Never before has there been a gift of this magnitude. His strength has been on display from the foundation of the universe, but it is the saving act of the gospel of Christ that declares the power of God. God displayed his love for us as his son hung on the tree. We in our hatred, deceit, and pride cruelly shout “crucify” as Christ die whispering “forgive them”. Of all the miracles of God none can equal such might as his capacity to rescue and save the soul of man. The sinful darkness of man is not greater than the goodness and righteousness of God. The risen Christ stands victorious over all the shortcomings of the world. Death has lost its sting. Sin has been defeated. Christ has won. He does not quit. He does not give up. His grace is able to reach those who are far away. His love never fails.
