He is Our Stability

“And he will be the stability of your times”
Isaiah 33:6

Life, much like the weather, can be very unpredictable. This week our nation was hit by a ‘polar vortex’. Parts of the U.S. experienced wind chills at -40′! One weather cast I watched warned that a person could become frost bitten if exposed to the extreme cold for as little as 5 minutes! I guess that means I should not complain of the cold here in Waco. It has now been forecast that we may have record highs this weekend.
So is life. One moment you step outside in need of a snow suit, the next you are trading it for a swim suit. At times in our lives we may feel like everything is great, at others we feel hopeless and afraid. Much of how we live is based on a certain set of expectations. When things do not work out as we expected we feel disarmed, angry, or confused. In Bible times, the prophets of God held a special place in society. They did not forecast the weather, but instead they were tasked with making the people aware of the spiritual climate. Inspired by God, they explained why things were happening the way they were and the spiritual conditions that had created the storms of life. They revealed God to be a constant. By obeying the call and instruction of God the people could find themselves holding fast to the anchor that would not be moved by the ebb and flow of life. As Isaiah preached, “And he will be the stability of your times, abundance of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge.” (Isaiah 33:6). God is stronger than the forces of nature, things visible and invisible, even death. Satan and all the powers of darkness will not prevail.
Christians can take great courage knowing that Christ has given us strength for the trying times in which we face. In the church, the body of Christ, we find a community to lean on when we feel over whelmed by life. Together we trust in the one who is greater than all things. His Word empowers us so that by faith we can endure. Remember what Jesus said, “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.” (John 14:1).
